Responsibilities of Bookseller

A bookseller has a broad and interesting role in the store, matching customer needs with merchandise and assisting with various tasks.

  • Acknowledging the presence of customers in a friendly and welcoming way
  • Engaging customers in conversation to learn more about their wants and needs
  • Helping ensure customer satisfaction by making recommendations, offering to find and obtain books not in stock, troubleshooting problems through to a positive outcome, and taking initiative to make sure no one leaves the store without finding something to satisfy their wants and needs
  • Constantly learning about new merchandise
  • Merchandising the store according to store guidelines so merchandise can be located by customers and colleagues
  • Contributing to the shopping experience by keeping staff recommendations fresh and writing shelf-talkers
  • Assisting in creating inviting displays
  • Enlisting the support of others when necessary
  • Performing inventory and point-of-sale tasks with accuracy

In addition to your Bookseller duties, you will also be responsible for assisting in coordinating book sales for off-site events, including school book fairs, author visits to schools, conferences, and other local author appearances.

Responsibilities of Assistant Book Fair Coordinator

The Assistant Book Fair Coordinator will assist in the curation, execution, and reconciliation of school book fairs.

  • Maintaining relationships with current local schools interested in hosting book fairs with The Wandering Jellyfish Bookshop
  • Targeting ideal schools to pitch book fairs
  • Meeting with school/parent contacts to train on our process and sales equipment
  • Assisting in the curation of books and merchandise for school book fairs
  • Assisting in receiving books into inventory system
  • Assisting in organizing and boxing of books and merchandise for drop off or storage
  • Assisting with communicating the ring-up procedure with store staff for in-store component on book fairs
  • Take point in development of an experimental catalog ordering program with local schools
  • Occasionally assist with outside sales and conference sales

All members of the bookselling team:

  • Assist colleagues as needed
  • Help keep the store clean and organized
  • Read staff communications and attend team meetings
  • Show consideration for colleagues by being on time
  • Adhere to store procedures and guidelines
  • Offer constructive feedback on ways the store can be improved
  • Maintain positive relationships with others
  • Represent the store in a professional manner when assisting with off-site activities
  • Assist in advertising and promotion tasks

30 hours per week with the potential to grow into a 40 hour a week position. Some nights and weekends required; hours and daily schedule will vary.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: $16 per hour
